My husband left yesterday for basic training. He's going to be gone for 5 1/2 months. We have a 2 yrold together and my older 2 boys are 5 and 4 and miss him like crazy. He's been Daddy since they were very very little. I didn't know if there were any other military spouses on here who could give some tips on handling it with their kids.

My boyfriend isn't in the military and my son is only 4 months old but he knows daddy and gets excited to see and hear about him. He does construction out of town and some times out of state or on the other side of the country. I ALWAYS make sure to give our son a huge and goodnight kiss from his dad and if his dad is able too we try to video chat so my son can see him and hear his voice. I know its harder to do that stuff in the military but maybe whenever he is able to call or anything put it on speaker and let all the kids talk to him with you. Give goodnight hugs and kisses from him every night. My parents used to use bed times as a form of countdown to whatever was coming up. So they would say "2 more bed times and it'll be here!" And i would get SO excited.

My husband deployed when my daughter was 4 . We did a countdown. Goodnight kisses(Hershey's) and she took her "daddy bear" everywhere! We would take pictures with the bear and pretend daddy was with us. It was rough but we made it through. You will too!!

My husband is in the military. While we didn't have kids while he was in basic..he has had to go on various long trips for training. It's definitely difficult and only one of my girls was actually old enough to be sad and miss him. We said goodnight to his photo every night and he even sent us a "goodnight" video and he recorded him reading a bedtime story before he left. I know your hubby is already gone..but there will come a point where he gets phone calls. Take every single one! In the mean time, telling my daughter that daddy was on vacation seemed to help a lot. We talked about all the fun he's having and that he will be home soon. Hang in there girl. Being a military mom isn't for the faint of heart! But you have a major support system. Use all your resources in your area ❤ much love!

My husband use to be in the military. We have a military teddy bear that we bought to this day it's in our daughter's room. We also bought all of our nieces and nephews a military teddy bears because they were super attached to my husband. Pictures help, watching videos of him helped, count downs help, could always have your boys draw pictures and send them to dad, care packages help (I use to do them when my husband was in AIT). But for basic it's mostly just letters for communication and maybe once in a while he'll be able to call home. Try not to miss a phone call even if it's in the middle of the night because you never know when he'll be allowed to call home again. It's tough being a military wife just hang in there and find a good support system. Don't be afraid to reach out to other military spouses going through the same thing. Good luck hun.

Having kids while hubby being away is very hard but truly the best thing you can do is just stay busy and as positive as you can. If you need to talk/vent feel free to message me!
