Depends on the age. I've tried the tapping on the hand thing for my almost 1 1/2 year old and he doesn't understand so I stopped. I believe in swatting a child's butt, but it needs to be at an age they understand consequences- so 3+, and you also have to be able to explain to them what they did and how to prevent it from happening again. I think those methods should be reserved for after you've tried other forms of discipline like telling them no, directing them somewhere else, trying time out, taking toys away, etc.
