I didn't use them because I was in a car accident at 38 weeks with my first and I suffered back issues, I was told the epidural could cause some side effects that could potenially make my back permanently worse, that and it could slow down my labor and end up putting the baby into distress if my contractions got too bad with the pitocin since I had to be induced. so I chose not to use it. when it comes to narcotics I didn't want to be drowsy and out of it when my daughter was born, I wanted to be fully present in her birth.
Right... It doesn't make you high like a drug... It strictly numbs your lower half. I had an epidural for like 18 hours and I was present and not drowsy at all the whole time before and after my LO was born
i choose no pain meds or epidural and that would be my choice every time if i had it. i didnt want to be numb in any way. i am pretty much a control freak. my last pregnancy i had a c-section and i absolutely hated the feeling of going numb. obviously surgery isnso different than a natural delivery but everything about this recovery was different. everyone has their reasons. but i simply prefer as natural as possible.

I never said the epidural made you drowsy. and for every person the Narcotics act differently. my midwife said they can make you feel out of it. that's why I chose not to get any meds. and I was not out of it after giving birth unmedicated to my 8lb daughter. the pain if anything made me feel happy from all the oxytocin being released naturally
Sorry to respond so late, but this is a good post...I went unmedicated bc my mom did it with all 5 of her kids and if she could then so could I! I was induced @ 42 wks, and it took 3 days. I ended up having a c-section bc he wasn't coming on his own. When they stopped the pitocin my contractions stopped completely. I didn't like the effects of the epidural the numbing, and the swelling most of all in my legs and feet, which also had to do with the c-section. But I didn't just want to go blindly into having a baby so I took 'The Bradley Method' approach to educate myself. Epidurals have effects on the baby too. One thing I learned is that if you are numb your body doesn't do the restriction 'baby hymlic (sp)' which gets the mucus out of the babys lungs. I forget why that's important medically now bc everything I've been through with my child, but I would totally choose natural again!

I asked for an epidural but couldn't have one because of bone spurs in my back, so I didn't have a choice ha

I didn't say the epidural made you drowsy. I said the narcotics did such as fentanyl, stadol, morphine.

I never said the epidural made you drowsy. and for every person the Narcotics act differently. my midwife said they can make you feel out of it. that's why I chose not to get any meds. and I was not out of it after giving birth unmedicated to my 8lb daughter. the pain if anything made me feel happy from all the oxytocin being released naturally
