15 Things to Avoid while Breastfeeding
1. Caffeine- it disturbs baby's sleeping pattern and they can become reliable on it.
2. Alcohol- it will make its way to baby's sensitive developing system and cause damage.
3. Sage- it interferes with milk production and can reduce baby's intake of nutrients.
4. Eggs- baby may have an allergy to them.
5. Peppermint- it slows milk production
6. Garlic- the scent and taste will cause baby to be fussy and not want to feed.
7. Broccoli and cauliflower- they cause gas to baby.
8. Wheat- can cause pain, crying and traces of blood in the stool.
9. Fish- it can affect the baby's nervous system.
10. Chocolate- it contains caffeine
11. Citrus fruit and juice- babies may become fussy, they might get a diaper rash and their immature GI tract could be irritated.
12. Nuts- they are a risk for allergic reaction to baby.
13. Parsley- it will decrease milk production.
14. Dairy- newborns are intolerant to formulas that have cow’s milk. This means that even when you eat ice-cream, yogurt, and cheese, it will end up affecting the baby through breast milk. These allergens may bring about vomiting and colicky symptoms in your baby.
15. Soy- it may cause alternate allergies.
i believe it depends on the baby. i have caffiene all the time. the only thing my baby won't accept is coffee. caffiene doesn't really affect him. i also had califlower lastnight and he is fine. then again my child has a rare body and personality. he's alot like his mom(guily as charged.) ;)
@js_kidsmom, @dawnrose, I'm a healthcare professional, and honestly, the majority of these (exception of alcohol and caffeine) are fine to ingest while pregnant. They just cause irritating side effects to baby.
this may be true idk seems to demanding for me.. I do all of these except 2 and 7... my baby is fine she sleeps almost through the night, I have a very happy 2 month old...it seems to me that health care professionals have too much say on what we can and can't put in our bodies. If women should avoid all this while pregnant, makes me wonder how our ancestors knew what and what not to eat.
@mommyof2x, nothing. Lol. No, you can actually eat the majority of these products, just wait at least an hour before you breastfeed. At least that's what I tell my patients
when I had my son they had me eat penut butter and other things so they could see how my son would react with the breast milk. he did great :) when he was older and eating solid foods I introduced him to peanut butter with no problems at all. its his favorite.
@ecahanes, true. But in moderation. At the pediatric office I work at, we say to wait until 6 months
I think going this extreme would be good if your baby is being very fussy
@shellymakuk93, neither does my little man
