Ugh I don't think my son will be ready to go off formula at 12 months. He's 10 months today and definitely doesn't get enough solids. He gags and spits up solid pieces of food every time it hits his throat. It makes me nervous to give him bigger pieces. I'm failing with feedings 😭😭😭😭😭😭

It's normal. Don't worry. He doesn't have to be off formula right at 12 months

Don't feel bad if he's not ready. Mine drank formula till he was about 16 months old. And then after we broke him from the bottle he never would drink milk at all. Still to this day (and he will be 4 next week) he won't drink milk. Give him time he will get use to solids. Some take longer than others. Good luck. 😊

What type of solid foods are you feeding him? We did lots of really soft squishy stuff when she started. Avocado & bananas were her favorite to mush!

He loves small pieces of bananas, macaroni, etc. he hates being spoon fed now. But I see so many people who's baby's are given a whole banana, bread sticks, meats, etc and they eat it like it's nothing. I'm just worried that I'm not helping him prepare for getting off formula by not allowing him to have bigger chunks of food. 1) he gags on everything that isn't mashed or cut very small 2) I'm still terrified of choking 😭😩

They have formula for kiddos 12+ months but I would bring it up to your ped next visit just in cases

@jaxmomma, it's ok. I was terrified of her choking forever. Gagging means they aren't choking though. He's seeing how far the food can go into his mouth. Someone told me "loud & red - go ahead, silent & blue - needs help from you" made me feel better for whatever reason. I know it sounds scary but he's totally fine. Also someone told me that their throats are the size of a wine bottle opening so it helped me judge how big was too big. I still cut up food for her but mostly because she spits it everywhere if it's too big. She's a sassy little girl. Sorry for the long ramble - haha.
