Charlie (2yrs, on the right) and Chewie (5 1/2yrs, on the left) are our babies. We're currently 15w5d with human baby #1. Being small dogs they aren't very good with children, they get scared of all the sudden movements. Chewie also has a case of separation anxiety when it comes to mom (me!). She growls and sometimes bites if anyone gets too close to me and if I'm not home she won't eat. Charlie has a problem with strangers and has bit pant legs of my parents and visitors just because they came in the door. I've paid for obedience school for the both of them and it hasn't helped, they started classes about a year ago. We're afraid that they aren't going to take to the baby when it comes at the end of June and that we'll have to find them new homes. I feel Charlie would do good in a home without small children and people who can understand his fear of strangers. Chewie on the other hand I don't know if she'll make it. I've had my mom "babysit" the dogs over weekends before and she doesn't eat the whole time I'm gone and just sleeps. I don't know if she could adjust to a life without her momma. I love both of them with all my heart (Chewie has been with me for 5 years and Charlie 1 year) but the baby will obviously have to come first. Has anyone else had to go through this very difficult situation? How did you make your final decision? How do you not feel like the most horrible person in the world? Any help or even just kind words would be appreciated. This subject has me crying every time I think about it.

@ambarrella like mrs.n2014 said don't leave your child alone with the pups. positive reinforcement works wonders. It's a lot of training though. For the fear of strangers have a bag of treats near the door and every time Charlie shows good behavior (ignoring the strangers or guests) have the person that came through the door give him a treat. You can try a clicker also which you can associate with good wanted behavior, and a dog whistle for negative behavior just to help get their attention. there is a lot out there that you can research also on what might work for your fur babies
