A membrane sweep pretty much separates the membranes from the sac...I think thats the best way i can explain it....it does not feel pleasant at all. It's uncomfortable....you may have a little bleeding afterwards but not a lot but thats normal....and it is done to help labor progress of course or to bring on labor/contractions. When they did it to me I had contractions after that. My situation was really weird but thats what it is lol....the doctor stuck her finger in there and just swept them. Everyone is different.
Everyones doctor/hospital is also different......mine was NOT gentle lol. Then again idk how someone would be able to do a "gentle" membrane sweep lol....
It's a very quick and simple process but not guaranteed to work. I've heard if it's going to work anywhere from a few hours up until like 24ish hours after. You also have to at least be dilated for the dr to get her finger in your cervix to the sac.

How long does it take to perform and how soon after does contractions start?

Takes minutes to perform and when they did it to me my contractions were strong and two minutes apart literally 30 seconds after she did it
