Did you feel completely normal one moment and the next having painful contractions? Was it a gradual buildup?
Right now I am 39+3 and my midwife said I'm still 3 cm dilated, 60% effaced and baby's head is engaged in birth canal. But that could mean nothing!
So does labor ever catch you off-guard or do you feel it coming on?

Catches you off guard. I was having contractions which I thou were Braxton hicks. But they came so soon and elevated to back to back quickly and my little one being my second child I didn't think it was the real thing lol

I guess only time will tell now but I was 3cm 37+1

I'm wondering the same thing... I'm 37 weeks and 3cm dilated with baby's head really low.
