Turns out that maternal instincts ( luckily) override our pain-avoiding reflexes. Last night just after my baby fell asleep, as I was carrying her to her bassinet, I stepped on the metal grate covering our floor heater (like a radiator embedded in the floor, common in old houses), which was on. Usually if you happen to do this, reflexes make you spring away from it in an explosive fashion. But with the baby in my arms, this did not happen. I became quickly aware that I was being burned and got off as quickly as I could with no jerky movements, didn't even wake my daughter. I'd rather have a burned foot than a jostled baby, point 1 for Mother Nature! 👍👶😴
