When I walk through the NICU to the sign out desk, I glance in the rooms. I pass about 10 rooms or so. We have been here for 6 days, and I have been here everyday with my baby. But these other babies...where is their families? Im a smoker so I go out every 2-3 hours so I am in and out during the day. 1 room had parents there for 1 night. Another baby had parents there for about half a day. But the rest of these newborns have no one. How can you just leave your baby? I feel bad when I go home to grab clothes and shower and catch about 3-4 hrs of rest. I feel awful leaving him during those times every couple of days. It makes me just want to go pick these babies up and hold them just to let them know someone loves them and it will be okay.
