Y'all I am so frustrated! I know many of y'all haven't heard of what they are calling "the great flood" which happened in south Louisiana in Aug. Well my step daughter and her mother's home went under water and they lost everything. My step daughter has since moved in with us on a permanent basis instead of just the weekends. Her mom would give her all kinds of processed and junk food, cokes, juice all that. When she moved in she was weighing almost 100lbs. She's 9. She has lost about 15lbs since moving in. I'm not saying I'm a total health nut as I am trying get back into shape myself but I do try my best to make sure my children lead a healthy lifestyle I don't buy cookies, and candies and all that and if my kids get a coke it's a treat. You can ask them what I let them drink and they'll tell you water. But the point of my post is that my step daughter will babysit and pick at every home cooked meal I cook. Everyone else has been done and she's still sitting there picking at it just waiting for me get upset and send her to bed so she won't have to eat it. But let us eat hot dogs or pizza or fast food she's the first one done. I know my cooking isn't bad or nasty as my very picky husband and two other children go back for seconds and thirds. It's almost like her body is so use to the things that are bad for her bc of her mom that her taste buds reject actual nutritional food. Her mom would cook hot dogs, hamburger helper, boxed foods, things of that nature. Tonight I cooked a homemade chicken Alfredo and she's acting like its the most disgusting thing she's ever tasted. I am at my wits end.

^that sounds like a super awesome idea. You can also ask her what she likes and try and explore healthy ways to make the dishes. It could be a learning experience

@sherrynygirl, we do cook together at times. Both of my girls and myself. I try to tell her that and she just shrugs. 😳
@yourmodernmomma I will have to try that but hopefully I can find healthier ways to remake the foods she does eat and her still eat them. We can't get pizza and fast food every night just so she'll eat. I pray I find something that works soon.

@yourmodernmomma, @sherrynygirl Those are both great ideas!!! It's not easy for children to adjust to too much change all at once (from my experience). Not everyone is a health nut. I myself am trying to make a transition into a healthier lifestyle and it is hard for me, so I can only imagine how hard it is for a 9 year old that just lost everything. Be patient with her. I'm sure things will get better eventually. Like the 2 ladies said at the top, find some healthy ways to make some of her favorite foods..together! I'm sure it'll be fun for the both of you! I hope everything works out!!

@paigeann051786, I am taking into consideration that there's a lot going on in her life right now especially with the behavioral problems and her adjusting to a more structured household all the time not just on the weekend. But she's been doing since her dad and I moved in together it's not a new development I guess it's more frustrating to deal with now bc it's not just once or twice a week it's very single time I cook now. But I am def going to try these ideas so hopefully she can see the fun side of healthy and hopefully bring back the things she's learned when she goes back with her mom after all the flood stuff is worked out.

my mom's parents both died when she was 12 yrs old with in 3 months and a day of each other. She should be grateful she has a roof over her head and a family who loves her.things can be replaced people can't.My son's are 21 yrs old and 13.I am 37 so i have exp being a mom and expecting my 3 rd son in dec..Children need to feel love.safe.good environment and children are very adaptable..i think its a great idea to ask her 1 night a week what she wants to eat and help her cook it healthier..not a health nut by far..but..i don't eat what my oldest son eats.and my younger son just started eating meat.hot dogs.while in camp..and me i love pasta. but..not so much red sauce haha.so our dinners are interesting

@sherrynygirl, I agree. She should be grateful. I spend more time with her then her mom and dad now. Her mom is staying in another town and her dad (my husband) works A LOT. I expect more appreciation from her than I'm getting. It's almost like she's purposely giving me a hard time and I have enough on my plate already. I would think she would respect me more now. But we don't let her get away with things here. She has to do chores and there is consequences for her actions.

@mrslasyone, She should def have chores and rules and appreciate you.you seem like a good caring mom. always expect respect from her.

@sherrynygirl, I do but she still just disrespects me. My son and daughter do not dare speak to me or act the way she does but i have taught them manners and respect from the get go. I just got my hands on her and teaching her this far along is HARD. But I finally found a punishment that works. I punish her from her mom (she goes to her on the weekends) and her mom is totally okay with it. Since this punishment is in place she's seemed to straighten out a little.

@sherrynygirl, he does but to he honest I'm the disciplinary to all our kids. It's very frustrating and we talk about this often. And she is in counseling at school. since the flood and the move and all. @mybabynme. you'd think that would work but she'd eat that mess and smirk thinking she got away with something nc she didn't have to do what I told her too.

@ashleymonae, I really try not to get upset but when she's been sitting there for over an hour picking at it just so I'll get upset and let her get up then it really makes me mad. I don't let her anything else. I give her a time limit and tell her it better be eaten or she's going to bed without supper. And I'll send her to bed at 6 if that's what time it is.

@ashleymonae, I completely agree. Especially when my pregnant butt stood in front of that hot stove and cooked it and her daddy's hard earned money bought it lol
