Anything they can play with and explore is great. My babys favorite toy is the little plastic spoons from Menchies frozen yogurt. So I pick up a few everytime I go. You don't have to buy expensive toys. Babies don't need tons of musical light up stuff. Just anything to help them develop their senses and work on hand coordination.

I didn't have many toys for my son until he was able to sit up on his own.

I went to once upon a child, my son will be a week shy from 5 months on Christmas, I got him toys that make noise and light up when he pushes buttons. We got him 5 pretty big toys and a new playmat for $50! And even though they're used he won't play with them very long so if you still want to spoil baby but not spend a lot I suggest once upon a child! Or good will or anything like that

You dont have to for my daughters first christmas i got her a small book and a small teething toy. she was only 2 months old spent about $10. you can get a little thing if you want just to remember 'you got this for your first Christmas ' but i didnt go all out:)
