I think towards the end like if you go past you're due date. or if baby is small like mine. they just put two monitors on your belly and it tracks baby's movement and heart rate
I got one on my due date. They just hook you up to a machine similar to the Doppler. It checks the baby heart rate and checks to see if you're having contractions that you may not be feeling.

My doctors (OB nor specialist) never did them, I only had them when I went into the ER for something.

I'm only getting them because of my blood pressure. I don't think they do them if you're low risk
