What is the difference between a diaper rash and a chemical burn from a diaper?

My little one has the worst rash on her bum that I have ever seen. It's red, bumpy in some places and has made her skin really tough. I've tried googling but I can't seem to find the answer or pictures I'm looking for. Help?
