you need to bleach it, but that's harder on your hair

that can help but bleach will make it pop more. i use a shower cap ( bag like) and sit under the dryer. the box you have is pretty bright tho

@septembermama2016, black box hair dye is extremely hard to cover up even with red. Black dye usually doesn't bleach out well either. I'd say from experience that the only thing that will be red is your roots not your whole head. Your best bet would be to get it professionally done. Even then it can take month to achieve that color red. It took me 6 months of treatment and dyes to finally get my hair red after using black dye at home in it.

@septembermama2016, if you can bleach it to that color in the picture then add the red that will catch on. you would have to make sure all the black is out though.
