I don't know how your relationship is set up so my advice might be useless in your situation. But if it were me, I'd just ask my husband permission. I'd just let him know the circumstances and let him know that I'd like to be there for support but that I wanted to make sure he was comfortable with the situation first. He'd likely say that it was fine and I'd be able to offer my support without it putting any strain on my relationship. Your SO may be different though and it may cause a fight to even ask him, I don't know. 😬

Not inappropriate at all, especially given the circumstances. If you still had feelings for him that'd be one thing. But I've stayed friends with an ex that I dated for almost 3 years and we talk sometimes, no big deal!
