Ladies, what's everyone's opinions & own personal experiences with different self soothing methods such as crying it out and fading?

Jacob now completely refuses to sleep on his own he absolutely must have someone next to him or holding him and I've been reading up on crying it out and the concept of fading whereby you are there 100% at the start and respond
To the baby's crys right away and then back off gently to let them learn to self soothe.

I don't know what methods are what as I've never looked up official titles. However I do what I call controlled crying. I lay them down, kiss & say goodnight & walk away. Sometimes I stay in the room if their crying or else I leave. I return after 5mins (less if their really distressed). Lay them back down, kiss & say goodnight. Then I'll leave. I'll come back after another 5mins, then slowly try to extend the time until they settle. This has worked with both my sons. There are bad nights & I'm up & down like a yo-yo but generally it's helped them settle themselves as I always come back but I never pick them up out of their cots. And I'd like to add when their poorly I don't do this. I'lI comfort them as much as they need! I can't bare leaving babies crying or getting too distressed but I'm also not getting into the habit of rocking my babies off to sleep every night. But that's my personal feelings.
