It sucked for breastfeeding in public. But I had short nipples (duh, bc this was my 1st baby!) and my body needed to get used to breastfeeding. We weaned off the nipple shield at about 6 weeks entirely. Took a while, but my little guy figured it out! Keep working at it 😃
@emilyd, I'm so afraid to leave my house because of it. It's seriously so messy. I try every feeding to get her to latch without it and she will for a few minutes, but then she can't. I have small nipples too, so I'm hoping with the few minutes that she does latch it will help draw them out.
Try tucking a burp rag under your breast. My little guy is a messy eater too. I always carry 3-4 rags with me. I have a gigantic diaper bag. You can totally leave the house. The more you do it, the more comfortable you'll be.

I spy a nipple shield 😃 Saved my life when I first started breastfeeding. You go, mama!
