When it doesn't fit, leaks, or doesn't hold up as well. As my son has gone thru sizes we notice he "filled" the diapers more quickly (one wet diaper seemed fuller, faster), even though he hadn't necessarily outgrown the fit. For him, a 3 is coziest at almost 7 months old. When he makes urination it doesn't look like he's been wet for hours, if that makes sense. (And no, he's never left in a wet diaper. It's just tricky to explain without showing.)
I get it i mean when she poops she explodes always has she has been in size one since she was a newborn and I'm running out in thinking if I should get more size one or just open the size 2 @tayek
@maxie, try the 2. I just recently moved my baby to the 3 for the same reason! When he would have his poop-splosions it would go all up his back!!! 😝 So far so good with the new size. And he seems more comfy. She is probably ready for a new size. Good thing is, they're adjustable! You could do the tabs snugly.
The diaper box has the weights on it so you know what size to use. We're on size 3 already. We use the pampers swaddlers also. I do use the dry baby at night because they hold more and he sleeps all night.

@sabby, Ajani can't even wear the Honest Company diapers, his skin is so sensitive. We love pampers or cloth only. ❤
