You can buy breathable mesh bumpers.

You dont need them, but it helps prevent them from their legs or arms getting stuck between the bars.

@caydensmommy, do they move around alot as newborns when sleeping?

I never put one in. I did try a mesh one but it didn't fit. If anything, I would go with mesh.

I have to use bumpers bc my son moves around so much that he comes close to hitting his head on the bars of the crib or catching his ankle in between the bars. His pediatrician told me that the risk is if you have something that's loose that he can suffocate on. But my son also belly sleeps so I obviously don't listen to anything that anyone says

My son didnt move a lot when he was a newborn when sleeping. But he always slept with me, never really used the crib.

@mybabychloe011017, i never use for My daughter and with this one im not using either I think is more easy for them to suffocate with them than get a serious injury for not using it .

I'm not putting anything in my crib cause I'm too scared about suffocation too. Not even stuffed animals or blankets.

It's a risk for SIDS. No crib sheets, pillows, blankets or stuffed animals. And no mattress pad either. Just a sheet.
