Sometimes medical reasons. Sometimes they just ask and get an elective induction. It depends on your doctor and hospital's policy though. Mine won't do an elective induction before 41 weeks.
I've known two women personally who have gotten induced and both times there was like complications with the pregnancy. my best friend had some sort of infection inside her stomach or her womb or something and the doctors decided then that it was best to just induce her and get the baby out. I personally wouldn't suggest getting induced unless the doctor strongly suggested it. I've done some research and it does say that it makes labor longer and could be more painful with longer healing times. but I'm not a doctor myself so I don't know that for a fact.

I got induced at 39 weeks because of preeclampsia, but I had an induction date before I knew I had it
