Some people have a really jaded outlook on what people who are on government assistance should look like. Just because you see someone in the welfare office dressed nice, or having a nice phone, or purse doesn't mean they don't work or they weren't working and recently lost their job and need help. Are you supposed to sell all your worldly possessions before you go to the welfare office? Should I have sold my car before I went to ask for food stamps? Do you have to dress like a bum to qualify? My dad bought me a Rose Gold MK purse and matching watch for Christmas and I carried right into the welfare office a month ago when I lost my job with all my identifications.

Yeah I agree. I didn't want to say anything or comment in her status but I totally agree. Assuming is one of the worst things that we can do!

@cubanese, Even when I was working I didn't qualify for insurance through my job because I was paid as an independent contractor. I had to go to the welfare office and apply for medicaid. People don't understand that you still qualify for things even when you do work

I don't think the main stereotype is not for the working class that happens to need help, it is for the lazy people who have never worked and we still continue to pay for them and they get everything handed to them for free, but when someone like me who is working everyday needs assistance i dont qualify.

@2queenbee9, The point is that you don't know who is who when you walk in there to judge.

Here in Kansas City there used to be guidelines and regulations for welfare benefits. Like if you were unemployed you had to be in a job seeking program but because our unemployment rate is so damn high those regulations were thrown out. It's sad when you desperately need the help and bust your butt and your denied but let someone who hasn't worked a day in their life walk in and get $700 in food stamps housing Medicaid AND TANF. Unfortunately I know too many

I think the reason is public assistance was for homeless and immigrants and illegal aliens who can't get a job. if you got a $500 purse and $700 phone and $200 shoes but claim your hungry and get no food ummm why you can't sell those expensive items you got and keep looking for a job in the meantime why you need public assistance but won't dispose of your material possessions? I think mk products and all other name brand stuff is overpriced and ugly plus lame everyone else has it. I carry a $10-15 purse I'm the only person with it and everyone will compliment it this purse that is 2 years old and the zippers are broken because it's unique like myself. I'm a super frugal girl even my phone I use WiFi I don't believe in conforming to society and what others think is on "fleek" for approval especially if my ass needed a hot meal or to buy a prescription or pay a bill my concern isn't go sit at welfare office with my screaming kids will playing on my iPhone and them using tablets and chewing on gum from out of my mk purse and leaving in a new car with $400 payments. it's called living within your means if you need food but got a fur coat on your living priorities aren't right unfortunately they do not deny people welfare for showing up looking well taken care of.

I'm sure she meant you look good as a compliment and I'm sure you didn't get denied benefits for how you look @cubanese

and I don't about the working people can qualify there are income limits and every state is different I lived in georgia last year they have Medicaid I had no job they denied because I do not work and said you must earn income. some states do not provide employees with health care and having health care is the law thanks to Obama. now I'm back in california thank god! I do not work I had injury in April and had surgery and I was getting better learning to walk until I found out I'm pregnant another ago and now my body is weakening and I'm on crutches again and my ankle and foot is swelling and stiff I'm hoping and praying I don't need wheelchair again bit any who in california it's called medical not Medicaid and it is primarily for people who don't work but I've been denied before for not working and I've been approved before when I had a job and had kiaser through the job I was paying for it really all depends on the state and the case worker who accepts your case whether your denied or approved. they also require here for you to provide bank statements I had a nice caseworker when I moved her she didn't ask and approved me medical same week and was given temp medical by the hospital because of my injury but in georgia even disabled I didn't qualify and was told to pay $14,000 upfront for surgery and that it's outpatient meaning after surgery we are kicking your afters out our hospital because you don't got the money to stay here but in california I stayed 2 days had my surgery was sent home with 2 bags of fresh food meals and essentials from the cafeteria and a bag of medical supplies I got the wheelchair they wouldn't give me in georgia and i paid $200 for crutches and xrays their biggest mistake ever was me moving to that hell hole! in california I recieved everything free including 2 day stay in the hospital and they paid a cab $220 to take me home since I wasn't staying in the area. my point is medical and Medicaid is different and having a job does or doesn't mean you will get benefits neither will not getting one really depends on the worker and office you go to. I was however approved for foodstamps in georgia even though not Medicaid wtf bullshit is that in california if you qualify for 1 government program you are approved for them all. I've had medical and foodstamps here but since I moved and live with my bf I'm not sure if I will be able to get foodstamps because they said my baby links me and him as a family so his income even if I'm not with him is on my case and can affect my benefits never known since I don't have kids but we shall see how that goes he doesn't qualify we tried to get a free phone and they said no the phone was for me but they denied me at the time for having an expired id. but yeah.... welfare programs are case by case decisions

meant had to pay $200 for crutches in georgia I also had a lung infection and no insurnace they told me I was fine and discarge me i went to another er refusing to leave and was told I need steroid and got a lung infection in almost lost my life in georgia also my injury happened in georgia and i believe it was God purpose because had that not happen I would've stay their because my uncle wanted to get me house out their but if I stay there probally be dead God was telling me my purpose wasn't for you to be there never in my life have a broken a bone until living there or had a lung infection since being a child due to my asthma. I also had blood pressure at 140/90 in georgia as soon as I came back to california my BP was 115-120/70 again that state was killing me literally. I was homeless in california with all my 3 suitcases and storage container in a hotel costing me $180 a day and still my blood pressure wasn't as high as it was in georgia! I would never live in the south again I'm not that kind a girl to begin with anyways

I don't know maybe someone new I didn't get to go in and see my caseworker when I applied last week because on the form I put my rent contribution is $200 my bf pays the rest and I have $300 saved she said okay then you have $100 so your not a priority case so you cannot see a worker today. the difference every worker is different and every state and county office I'm in another County 2 hrs away from where I'm originally from and when I applied earlier this year there I was approved even though I had a few thousand in my bank account but the county I was in is more expensive rent is $2300 for studio blesses were I am now a 1bd is $650-900 so they count that all into their equation. the worker you had just figured your not high priority compared to the people who walk in dirty and in rags and their were although like that and people camped out in front the building

@blackbutterfly, They can't judge people based off their material possessions. That's why the welfare system is based off income. If that were the case, I have 100's of dollars worth of tattoos on my body that that I was able to pay for a really long time ago. That's doesn't mean I don't need help now and I can't sell that.
