make sure the get dewormed by the place that you get it from before the cat enters your home and try to get a declawed cat or make sure theur claws are cut. cats can spread disease to unborn babies in these two ways don't clean the litter box either. other than that it is perfectly okay

Do not declaw the cat. That's very inhuman. Other than that, be careful cleaning the litter box. I still clean the litter, but I've had cats my whole life so my doctor said it was fine. But if you've never had a day before or haven't had cats in a while, leave the litter cleaning to someone else.

I've never owned a cat before so this is definitely going to be an interesting experience.

Big things with cats are they prefer to come to you, rather than you coming to them. Offer your hand for them to sniff, and if they are comfortable with you they usually will rub or bump their head into your hand. Definitely get scratch pads if you're concerned about the cat scratching everything up. Also cats like to get in the middle of everything. Table, counter, etc. I'm fine with it because I've always had cats, but some people may not be okay with a cat climbing and laying around on places that you eat. I personally love cats and prefer them because they aren't as high maintenance as a dog would be. They're more independent so I don't feel as bad when I have to leave them at home when I go to school.
