My youngest sister just turned 10 in July and my mom bought her an iphone 6. My son is 9 and he and my sister are best friends. So now he's all like "I want an iphone 6 when I turn 10 too." So I was thinking about getting him a cheap, touch screen, tmobile phone to my plan and if he can be responsible, not lose it, or break it until his birthday in March then getting him the iPhone.

It's hard to deal with these kinds of things, I got my first phone when I was 12 and it was a boost flip phone and I ended up losing it that same year, Younger kids don't know how to appreciate expensive things. technology is a big thing now and kids are getting more expensive stuff sooner.

@alexdoe, Because I'm a single mom he's kind of a latch key kid. So he does walk to and from school by himself, or walk home from practice with his friends on occasion, so he always had a phone, but it was not a smartphone and it did the minimal calling and texting. We recently moved to NY this summer from a town that was one square mile big and since it's such a big city he won't be doing so much by himself, but I still feel like I need to stay in touch with him. The problem is he's in the 4th grade now and these kids are walking around with phones better than mine. I only have a damn iphone 5.

I got my first phone at 10. I think it's fine if he's responsible. And you can check it periodically so that you can always keep track of what he's doing and who he's talking to

dang, I never got even a flip phone until I turned 15. I traveled out of state all the time for basketball, otherwise I probably would've had to wait until I was 18. I didn't get my first smartphone until I was 19 years old

my friend bought her daughter this watch for her 10th birthday I can't remember what the name of it was but she can hook it up to her iPhone to keep track of where she is bit the watch can make phone calls and you can only have a certain tree ain't amount of numbers in it and it does a few other things and I know she didn't spend alot of money on it.
