A friend gave me her car seat with two bases and I have yet to try and install them. For infants, do car seats have to fit facing backwards? Does it matter if it's in the middle or on either passenger or driver side? Thanks in advance

Yes infants need to be rear facing. Middle is the safest for side impacts as long as there is an anchor for the base. If not either driver or passenger sides work too

Yes they have to face backwards and yes, middle is best.
