Any mamas have/had the Depo shot?? What was your experience with it?!

I had it, I was on my period for 3 months straight, gained a little weight then never had a period again. Also I came off of it took me a year to get pregnant. Only took the depo for a year aswell.

I loved it. Had it for about three years with no problems or side effects but the last year I got acne and started getting periods again so I stopped it.

I'm on it now. I bled for a little over a month which sucked but I stopped recently. Other than that I have no problems!

I've only had one shot so far though. The doctor told me I shouldn't have a period after the third shot

@samijoy, I've been on it for a month now (my first shot) I got my first shot while on my period and haven't bled since. I missed my period this month also.

@mamabritt, I might have had a period the first month but after that I had no bleeding or spotting until the very end

Hey! I got the depo shot when I was 15 after I got pregnant by my boyfriend (my mom thought forbidding me to be on birth control would keep me from having sex 🙄)and I miscarried (scared me into getting birth control that my mom wouldn't know about). Right when I turned 18 I got married to my now husband (same guy who knocked me up at 15 lol). In that time period I gained a ton of weight.. Went from 130 to 160 over a year span, no period for two years (and even though I had no period I was constantly spotting brown nasty discharge). I went to a specialist and was put on I believe was estrogen pills to start my cycle again when I was 17. We started trying to get pregnant immediately when we were officially engaged (at 17 around the same time i saw the specialist). In the year of trying we got pregnant once, but miscarried again when I was 18. After that heart ache we gave up, and then ended up pregnant like six months later. Now I can't stop getting pregnant! Lol. For me the depo shot was a negative experience.

@forever223, oh wow!! I've heard a lot of bad things about the Depo and a lot of good things. I guess everyone is different. I haven't had a period since being on it. And I wish I would have a period lol. I maybe switching to Nexplanon soon.

i was i wouldnt have a period for 2 months then the month before getting my shot again id have my period that whole month. never gained weight probably because i work alot and im always moving and it took my sex drive away

I really think it just depends on your body. Some people take the depo shot just fine, and others see all of these negative side effects. I have multiple friends with the arm implant, and love it! I also know multiple people with the mirena who love it. I tried the mirena, and was not a fan.. I bled the whole 3 months I was on it, and sex was awful with it up there. I've heard mixed reviews about the copper IUD. Would you give that a try? Only asking because maybe back to back hormone birth controls wouldn't be a good idea?

@forever223, I've had the mirena before, hated it!! I had it taken out after a year and a half. Gave me horrible cramps and back pains and migraines. When I went in to get birth control I was gonna get the copper IUD but the doctor told me since the mirena have me back pains then it wouldn't be a good idea to get the copper IUD bc it'll do the same. Idk. My doctor told me since this is my first Depo shot to give it some time. Really my only side effects are mood swings, bloating and hair fall out. I haven't gained weight. I just miss having a period. Lol am I crazy for that?! But I didn't think about the back to back hormone. That probably wouldn't be a good idea. Lol
