I found a pump that has an app to your cell phone that helps first time moms remember when to pump and keeps track of what your pumping.

for my son I'd pump every 3 hours for 20 minutes. it is really hard. nipple cream and special teas to help increas my milk production were my best friends.

u know when it's done because no more will come out. pump only 15 to 20 min.... no more no less every 3 to 4 hours
