Am in my 2nd trimester & they had just done another test to check for extra chromosomes & stuff. My results for Down syndrome were negative as well thank god

My first OB didn't do any tests but they sent me to a high risk hospital here in NY to check for birth defects at 21 weeks (I'm high risk and prior to finding out I was pregnant I was on a lot of prescription medications due to an illness I have) so they wanted to make sure none of those affected the baby. But my now midwife asked if I had certain tests ran at about 18 weeks so I think that's what you are referring too. And they need to be done around that time because she said it was to late for me to have them done when I started seeing her when I was about 27 weeks.

But when they checked for birth defects they did it by an in depth ultra sound. And he was perfect. I'm kind of mad my prior OB didn't offer me these other tests! But hopefully baby is ok :)

@missjess, @wandal24 so in my 2nd trimester theyll check for more birth defects? or if they did down syndrom ones they did multiple ones

Am not sure but I got mine done at the very beginning of the 2nd trimester it was all due to them finding 3 small cysts in my babys brain and they decided to give me extra tests that's when they did the down syndrome trisomy 18 test and all & they sent me to the hospital I'll be given birth in for the advance tests & I got blood work done because I didn't want to do the one where they take some amniotic fluid from him I didn't want to risk it. Am just waiting on the results now, you should ask your ob

@tbianco20, you should have more blood work done around 20 weeks I believe. at least that's how it was for me, two different times one in 1st trimester and then again on the 2nd.

@cparnell, is birth defects rare..i already know he doeant have down syndrom

@tbianco20, honestly I'm not sure all my testing with all 3 pregnancies have came back negative for defects, you should also get an anatomy scan around 20 weeks where they measure baby and check the heart, kidneys, etc in an ultrasound.

@cparnell, ohh most def i hear babiea heart beat all the time ..i havent seen him since he was 8 weeks and im now 16 weeks..an my appointment is wednesday so theyll book me for my next appointment for 20 weeks ..so itll be great timing
