they will loan you a pump at the er. and you can still breastfeed on anesthesia and most pain meds, like percocet. I just had mine out not even 2 weeks ago. they loaned me a pump and I would have been able to pump if they wouldn't have given me dilaudid instead of percocet. they will tell you to pump and dump but it's definitely not necessary if you don't get a super strong pain killer. and save the milk anyway for milk baths or somrthing. definitely pump, but save it for milk baths or something, but don't feed baby for 24 hours from the time they gave it too you. if possible see if they can give you percocet after! good luck!

@littlemissrainesmommy, they put me on an antibiotic and a painkiller I can't breastfeed on. 5 days of formula feeding hurts me but I have to. I'm getting a manual pump until mine comes in.

look up your medications on lactmed. Dr's will automatically tell you to pump and dump because they aren't really taught much about breastfeeding. just Google lactmed and then enter in the search bar the medicines

Thanks! I'm pretty sure I can't with the painkiller it's hydrocodone but I'm not sure about the antibiotic.

@littlemissrainesmommy, I talked to the pharmacist about it when I picked up my prescriptions. I've been out of the hospital since about 6 this morning. He said that as long as I take it then go without a feeding actually attached to me (5-6 hours) then I can feed him the next time around and be ok. That goes for both the antibiotic and the pain killer. I bought a manual pump today and so I can pump a bottle, feed him, take it, then have the bottle to feed him until the next time we can latch.
