So we switched doctors when we moved because my other one is now 30-45 minutes away. I LOVED that office. it was such a positive atmosphere and fun place to be. the downside, apart from distance, is that I was working with nurse practitioners and would go to whatever OB is on call in L&D the day I deliver without meeting them prior.
I had my first appointment with my new doctor today, who has wonderful reviews, and i was a little disappointed. the office was dark and everything was painted blue. it had a faint vomit smell and the wait was almost an hour even though I was the only patient and scheduled for the first appointment of the day. the office is 2 minutes from my house and the hospital I would deliver at is only 5 minutes away. my doctor was nice enough but has an Indian accent and can be hard to understand. he is also a man and i really preferred a woman.
MY QUESTION IS: Should i go to the office that is close to me where I will at least know who is delivering my baby, which would benefit my birth experience, OR should I make the drive to the office and hospital that are farther away, which would benefit my prenatal care experience but leave me kind of blind when it comes to who I will deliver with?

Honest opinion here...the doc who delivers you is literally only in there for a brief moment. The nursing staff at the hospital where you deliver is the most vital team during labour and delivery. Id go where you were comfortable in the interim.

@phinnybinz, so what do you think about the distance? both hospitals are ranked and rated very similarly but one is close and one is far. would it be smarter to go to the closer one in case I start labor and have to be sent home and then need to go back?

My doctor was like that, I had to see every doctor there because I wouldn't know who would deliver me but you can always ask. My office had a schedule of who would be on call! Then maybe decide

it all depends on what will make you and baby more comfortable. with me, its both bcuz im picky.....i go to a farther hospital and OB to get better care but there 12 doctors and no way to tell exactly who will be delivering my baby but to me thats fine bcuz they rotate me and i get to meet everyone.....my OB is 35 min away...and where I'll be delivering is 35-40 min away as well...but its amazing. but if i was you i wouldnt go to any place with a faint vomit smell. im Indian and have a SLIGHT accent its not bad but when i have a doctor thats from my country that i cant understand i give up and speak hindi or i just switch doctors bcuz i just cant lol. but thats just me ide say go with your gut!!😊😊💖💙💖💙

and @phinnybinz is actually right. during delivery both times literally i had no attention towards the doctor at all. the doctor isnt there long.

Have you done the tours and really compared their facilities? Distance, for me, was never a big deal because I was always 45-1 HR away from the closest. I'd look into their maternity units and see which fits you better. For instance, some push room-in babies, some nursery, some have private, semi private or shared rooms for recovery, some don't promote or allow SO's sleeping in the room. All of those are factors I'd look into

@zaysmomma thanks ladies. I definitely think I am more comfortable at halifax in general. I haven't done a tour of either L&D yet and maybe that would help. @heera I just can't imagine him giving me instruction in a stressful situation and me having to go "HUH?!" It's all very frustrating.

yea i totally understand. ide just tour the farther hospital and see if you can tell them how you feel and see if they can make you a little more comfortable. i love where im delivering...actually where im delivering is one of the best hospitals specifically for babys and mothers and a lot of people i know just couldnt get in and not a lot of people are able to deliver there so im so thankful and have no problem taking that drive. and as far as the accent thing yea i cant stand it either and at times i dont wana speak to them in hindi bcuz im like you need to learn english lol....

Id go with the Doctor you like best or maybe try another doctor in your area. 30-45 min isn't too far. I live 20 min from mine but with traffic it can easily take an hour. I didn't have any closer options. Plus, If they send you home you can always try to get a hotel room closer to the hospital if you think you will be going back within several hours.

thank you for all the advice ladies! @babybue16 @heera @phinnybinz @zaysmomma I just called my other doctor and scheduled an appointment for monday. I feel SO MUCH BETTER and i probably would have just toughed it out with the other guy without your help! thanks for guiding me 😊❤❤❤
