I am not excited to be changing doctors. We moved about 45 minutes away from my original doctor who I was very comfortable with. it just doesn't make sense to make the drive and deliver to her hospital when the local hospital it 4 minutes from my new house. I mostly hesitant because my new doctor is a man and i am just not as comfortable with a male doctor. I know they have the same qualifications and things but I would much rather have a doctor that has text book knowledge of what is happening to my body as well as a personal knowledge. does anyone else feel this way? I know i need to stay open minded and meet him but I feel very hesitant.

I personally like a male OB better. idk why, I just feel safer in their care I guess. especially if he's been doing it for a long time. my OB has been practicing for 35+ years & he's awesome!!

I am in a similar boat. We are moving this week and I have a new male doctor. I'm trying to keep myself very open minded. I mean the way I make myself feel more at ease is these doctors went to school for at least ten years plus they've delivered hundreds of babies and are familiar with every possible outcome and every type of pregnancy/woman/labor.

@kimberkatherine, i completely agree. I just can more easily see a male doctor making my birth feel more like a standard procedure. which I understand it is, but with a woman doctor that has experienced the fear and anticipation of their first birth, i feel like I will get empathy as well as sympathy. it's less of a procedure and more of a life altering event. and i dont think a man can truly empathize with me there.

@fruitloop13, I see where you're coming from and that is very true, but I would just tell him when you meet him; be like, "hey, I really need to know that you're going to be there for me and treat this as the life altering event that it is and not just another procedure. I need to know that." just be transparent about your needs, he might be able to set your mind at ease right away. Ya know? The doctor I'll be seeing had nothing but incredible reviews about how he never treated anyone like just another patient.

I had a male ob. loved his! using him again with this one actually :) I've never had issues with an attitude from him or anything. he seemed to just get the business done and that was it lol and answered any questions I had as well. and to be honest you won't see your doctor until your about to push... the laboring process you will only see the nurses. the only thing your focused on is the baby once he/she comes out. is hard to explain but I think at the end of the day you would be just as pleased with a male ob :)
