Moms to toddlers and up!!!!! Help!!!
Moms to toddlers and up!!!!! Help!!!
I'm having a situation with my 6 year old son, he's looking up to his grandfather, which is great, but for the most very wrong reasons! My dad is overweight, not by much, he only has one kidney and is currently trying to lose weight and get healthier, well when my dad eats, he over eats, that's his biggest problem. We'll never in a million years did I think a child would look up to a person and want to be like them in that way! My son for awhile there, would over eat until he threw up! His excuse! "I wanna be like grandpa!" My husband and I have came to a point where we have to watch him extra careful when he's eating and sometimes even stop him, before he makes himself sick. I have to tell my parents to do the same and anyone else my son is around and I'm not! My dad is aware and follows our rules with his eating, but then my dad continues to eat like that in front of him.
Anyone know how I can get my son to stop this? I can tell when he's hungry for more and when he's just eating to over eat, I mean come on, does your 6 year old, go for 6ths when it comes to pizza! This is what I'm dealing with, I just want to teach him, it's not good to do this, but he's 6! How do i get this through to him without him thinking grandpa is also wrong! (Which he is) I don't want him looking at him badly.

Firstly, as I'm sure you're doing, size his plates for his stomach & not his eyes. After that point, allow only water. Water can ease the "hunger" pains. Tell him that there's something that grandpa doesn't know: often times when you feel like you're hungry, you're often actually dehydrated (which is true) and give him water. And there is nothing wrong with telling him that grandpa is living unhealthily. Truth is truth and it will not affect his overall look on his grandpa-just his eating habits. Also, leading by example is key. And you can always ask his pediatrician for advice on ways to curb overeating and to instill healthy eating practices. ❤️

Yeah, I do that, and he will take a fit every time wanting more, & I will refuse and tell him, he gets a small snack later. He does love water, and drinks it asking for it more than any child I know, which is the healthy thing that he's sees both his grandfather and dad do, but usually drinks juice or milk with his meals, but with that being said I will definitely offer him a glass of water also when he starts wanting seconds and see if that helps. Thanks! @evococa

No prob! Hopefully that helps some! Meal times are hard. My son is the opposite-always hungry but never wants what we serve lol. At least your guy loves water!! :D
