it's not safe at all! their head can fall forward and cut off their breathing. there was something in the news not long ago that a mom brought the INFANT in in the carseat and left baby in it to sleep and ended up dying from the airway being blocked
Parents are being warned of the dangers of letting their babies sleep in car seats after a study finds that more than a dozen children under two have suffocated after being left to nap in sitting devices.
Many parents use sitting or carrying devices, such as car seats, swings, or bouncers, as alternative sleeping environments, which could lead to potential injury or death.
A study of children under two who had died while sitting in a car seat, found that 31 had either suffocated or been strangled by the seat straps.
The study, published in The Journal of Pediatrics, reviewed deaths of children under the age of two that occurred between April 2004 and December 2008.
Out of 46 deaths of children under two from asphyxia associated with sitting and carrying devices, 31 involved car seats.
The study, carried out experts at Penn State Medical Centre, Pennsylvania, led by child specialist Dr Erich K. Batra, found that in 16 cases, the child had been strangled by the straps of the car seat.
The elapsed time from when the infants were last seen alive to when they were discovered, ranged from as little as four minutes to up to 11 hours.
'Many parents use sitting or carrying devices, not realizing that there are hazards when they do this,' Dr Batra said.
'Infants and young children should not be left unsupervised when using a sitting or carrying device due to the risk of suffocation and death.'
As a young child's airways are still very soft, and babies lack the muscle strength to move or lift their neck, their airways can close as a result of the position they are sitting in, and the baby suffocates
Experts recommend babies are put to sleep on their back in a Moses basket or cot. Once they are old enough to roll, the baby can find their own sleeping position.
