So my boyfriends mom is Nigerian and his father is Nigerian. He was born in London, but moved to America when he was 11. Anyways, he identifies as American. His crazy ass mama who hasn't spoken to either of us this entire pregnancy asked for the baby's name, and my BF told her. And she responded with this long ass African/Nigerian name, saying that should be that baby's name. Like what? You're not naming our child for one. And secondly, why tf would I name him something that I can't even spell, let alone pronounce? She thinks it's important that the baby knows his culture, and he will. My boyfriend identifies as American, and lives an American lifestyle, as do I. So that's how our baby will live. And when my boyfriend was young she changed his Nigerian last name to an American last name, so he could have an easier life in America. But now you want me to give my child a name, that's going to create a harder life for him? No thanks.
