there isn't really a "set" dilation, they sent you home when the dialating process halts. so if you're dilating and continue to do so, they will keep you
in my state you have to be 6 cm and in active labor to be kept. it used to be 4 cm no matter what and they would keep you but that was over 5 years ago
there is not a set "dilation number" they recommend 5 or 6 to admit you. but if you are having contractions every 3-5 mins apart and are very consistent and have had them for a hour, or if your water has started to leak go in!!

when I went into labor I was only 1cm but was thinning out fast they kept me but I also was suppose to have a scheduled c section
