I won't be getting paid when I take off for maternity leave. Anyone else..how many weeks are you taking off? It's a little stressful thinking about, trying to save money but it's hard. It's only my income coming in bc I'm a single mom.

I'm sure you checked, but do you have short term or long term disability benefits through your job?

I'll be getting paid for a little less than 4 weeks out of the twelve I'm taking off. Luckily I got a promotion in December and I make enough to where I've reached my savings goal already.

I work for my brother, no benefits. Luckily he will be giving me work I can do from home. But realistically I know I'm not going to be able to any work right away with a newborn. How long do ppl usually take off for? @kenitra

You have a unique situation working for your brother, but if an employer has 50 or more employees by federal law you are given 12 Weeks unpaid leave. I also have short term and long term disability so I will get 60% of my salary for 12 weeks. You can also use paid vacation days. I am probably going to take 16 weeks but I might decide to be a stay at home Mom. It's hard to leave my career I worked so hard for though. My fiancé gets 2 months of fully paid paternity leave! Those companies are rare, but they exist.

@kenitra, oh ok I did not know all of that! good to know though even though it doesn't apply to me at the moment. That is a tough decision. I know being a stay at home mom isn't for everyone, but if I had the ability to I think I would.

My biggest piece of advice for any woman of childbearing age that is planning for a family is to sign up for that short and long term disability! Not just for pregnancy, but in case of any accident or illness. I think I pay $64 per month to have both.

I am a waitress and single mom & was off 12 weeks. I definitely don't get paid leave and I've made it just fine. I saved up a lot of money. Im back to work now only 2 nights a week and it's rough. I'm not on any welfare but wic. I don't get child support either bc my "child's father" isn't allowed around us and isn't on the birth certificate anyway. So it can be done 😊

@babyjjsmommy, I'm glad you're doing well! it's good to know that it's not impossible. I'm on WIC as well but not welfare.

I went on short term disability at 30 weeks had the whole time off then it switched to my maternity leave which was 8 weeks because I ended up with a c section as soon as that ended I applied for my 6 weeks of bonding which I'm receiving money for so my return to work date isn't until June 11th the last day I worked was December 23rd! So after im done with this pay I'm going to resign from my job on good terms and I'll receive my 30 hours of vacation pay that I have saved up and be a sahm from there !

It is offered in your benefits package by most employers, you just have to sign up and it comes out of your check each month. But you can also buy it on your own independently. Just do a google search and all the major insurance companies will come up with options. It won't apply for this pregnancy since pre-existing conditions aren't covered. It's so worth it to have!

yeah my job gave me 2 weeks severance pay when I went I was only taking 8 weeks but now imma have to take twelve cause my son was over due and I have to get my tubes tied and my job don't pay shit so I applied for assistance from the county hope I can get it in phoenix they have where u can get one lump some of cash instead of every month and that a help with my savings till I can go to work the struggle is real I think all jobs should offer a FMLA pay cause having a baby shouldn't be a punishment at work
