I'm not even hooking the base to Andrews seat back up. Absolutely no room in the back seat since I have to sit back there. So took the base out and put Andrew in the middle and fits so much better. Yes it is completely safe to use an infant seat without a base IF you install the seat correctly. The base is for convenience and a piece of mind.
