I'm confused. They say no cow's milk until 12 months, but recommend yogurt, cheese, and cottage cheese after 6 months. But, those are clearly made with cow milk. Can anyone explain this? Is it that they just mean they allow dairy....they just tell you to avoid drinking milk alone because they don't want that to replace breastmilk/formula?

Yes they mean don't replace breast milk/formula with whole milk. it doesn't have enough nutritional value to replace, after 12 months they will be getting if from foods instead

Omg I always wondered about this ask, that's why I was so iffy about giving her yogurt, like what? 😮

@mommytolucia, right? I think @mybabyloves is right though. Just don't rule out formula/breast milk, but giving food with (cow milk)dairy is totally fine.

as far as I know that is the only reason they tell you not to give whole milk before a year I worked in a daycare for 4 years and we had to take infant nutrition courses and that's what we were told that it was not a substitute

It's also because their tummies can't digest the higher levels of lactose in cow milk until around 12 mo. Yogurt and cheese and stuff have a lower amounts of lactose so they can start to digest those around 6 mo.
