this lady on my fb has two little girls. one is biracial (black and white) and the other is just white. shes currently with the father of the white little girl and both her and the boyfriend refer to the biracial little girl as monkey?? they don't refer to the other little girl as any animal related nickname. idk what to think of that. i just know that every time she or the boyfriend posts pics of the kids on my timeline they refer to them as monkey and the nickname of the little white girl always changes, but they don't really refer to the biracial girl as any other nickname. idk if it's a term of endearment or not but i'm trying my hardest not to think it's anything racist. i was friends with her in high school so i'd hate for her to be damaging her babies in any way

I call my step son monkey. I would say that its not meant to reference her childs race but just a nickname they ended up using. They probably don't even see the coincidence in it since I would at least hope she doesnt look at her child and see race.

My husband and I refer to our toddler as monkey and our unborn child his nickname always changes, I don't know them as people but it may just be their little nickname and nothing more, hopefully

I call my toddler Monkey also. We dont have a nickname for our soon to be newborn or my daughter (because we dont get to see her right now) but I would hope it isnt because shes mixed. thats crazy.

@pbandjones, @ashsanta @babyrhea16 yeah. i know monkey is a common thing but i've just been scrolling through posts and every picture they address her as monkey, even when they call the little white girl by her name. maybe it's just habit but im praying it's not racist

it does seem odd to me since that is a common racial slur.. but all I can say is to hope that they mean it in another way. especially the mother. I would hate to think that she would tear down her own child like that

I think it's not appropriate. Even if that's not how they mean it, it's still offensive and the fact that there is MILLIONS of nicknames in the world and they picked the one that is a racial slur against black people for their half black child is almost impossible for it to mean nothing. Why would they pick that if not to be rude? They know that's used as a racial slur for black people and they still call her that. It's rude. She's going to get older and understand and its really going to hurt that baby.
