@nanz13, So I actually just called EDD today to clarify maternity leave for myself. This is what I was told: To qualify, you have to be working right now, you have to have worked at least one tax quarter (3 months) in the last 18 months and made over $300, and your employer has to have been paying into SDI (you can tell if they do this by looking at the deductions on your pay stubs). Maternity leave is conventionally 4 weeks before the baby is born, 6 weeks after the baby is born, if it is a natural birth, or 8 weeks after the baby is born if it is a c-section. Then you can also apply for paid family leave which is up to an additional 6 weeks beyond the initial maternity leave. You can't file for maternity leave until you have started your leave (I.e. file it online the day after your last day of work). It is about a 7-10 day process before you get your first payment. Here is the website to get all of the information for maternity leave (in California, it is filed under a disability insurance claim). http://www.edd.ca.gov/disability/State_Disability_Insurance_(SDI)_Benefit_Amounts.htm @gorgeoushar, it doesn't directly go through your employer, you go through the state to get it, so your employer doesn't necessarily have to say anything to you about it. It's the same as maternity leave. It's basically an extra 4 weeks of paid leave. You apply for it towards the end of your maternity leave.
