Mom's I need opinions! Please please please read!

✋✋✋✋✋

So I have been really upset lately and I think I really feel like I need to try to do something big.

My mom is a foster parent in ohio. And she has been for 17 years. The children in my mom's home are often put up for adoption, and we all hope they find the perfect forever family for them.

However what I have see to be true is that more often than not, doesn't happen. In my families history of fostering 75% of the kids that get adopted, end up given back! I know that seems high but in a really sad reality, when I talked to more foster parents the number seems to average out to between 55%-65% of children that after being adopted are sent back to the children's home and foster families. (my mom's numbers are higher I believe because she strictly takes on children with special needs)

😠😠😠😠

I'm hoping I'm not the only one disgusted by that number. I can remember the dozens of times it has happened to kids at my mom's house and the reasons for why the parents changed there mind are never good.

A 5 year old my mom has right now has been adopted and given back twice because the adoptive families didn't think she was going to need as much attention as she did, she's in the process of being adopted again to a 3rd family right now and I can't help but wonder what effects this will have on her. My mom has 2 little boys right now ages 2 and 3 who were just given back also for the second time. The first family said they were more work than anticipated, the second family apparently thought the state would help them with money to raise the boys (not sure why) and apon finding out they would not be receiving a check, they gave back both boys.

😣😣😣

Now I am absolutely all for adoption. I think it's a beautiful thing. But I have watched so many children go through being returned and it's unfair. These kids go through major life changes. They have to relearn what and who family is. Some of them go through having there names changed, they learn a new set of rules and behaviors every time they are given back.

This causes major issues for some kids. I will say some kids are so young they don't remember. But some kids develop serious trust issues, attachment disorders, personality disorders and more. These can cause serious issues for a kid! And I think it can be prevented better!

😎😎😎

I think 2 things need to happen the first being better education! People need to know the struggles these kids have to go through better and I think perspective adoptive parents need to be more well taught as to what they are about to do! Teach them how much it costs, basic baby skills like diapers and first aid, maybe even make them use those fake babies for a few weeks. I don't mean to make adoption harder but these kids need to be better protected from excuses like I didn't know babies required work.

I also think there needs to be some type of legal punishment for giving a child back. I'm not sure what though. 😧😧 maybe having to pay the state so much money every month to help with the cost of keeping a child in the foster care system and the future therapy bills for the kid. Maybe it should be some type of child abandonment charge. I'm not sure how it would be punished but people need to know it's not OK and will not be taken lightly.

😩😩😩

OK that's most of my rant. I don't want these kids growing up feeling like second class citizens. it's wrong. If someone has a biological child and decides eh this is to much work and just drops the kid off somewhere and leaves they would be charged with neglect and abandonment so I don't understand why adopting a child to legally be yours, agreeing to love and care for this child, then just dropping them off somewhere isn't a crime too? It seems to me that they should have the same protection in our legal system as children born to there biological parents get.

( I realized some people give there children to legal safe drop locations and that is not what I'm referring too)

😣😣

I want to try to propose a law in Ohio to prevent this. But I'm not sure if anyone would stand behind me at all or if I'm being ridiculous but I really don't think I am. Please mama's give me some help

Мама двоих (1 год, 6 лет)

You aren't being ridiculous but it's like that in fl too I was a foster care kid one of the group homes I had been too 2xs for kids 5-17 I saw the same kids that were suppose to be adopted given back cause they were too much work or they thought they'd get a check for adopting a foster kid and they don't so before the adoption was finalized they would call the case worker and back out they'd be placed back to the group home and it was heartbreaking cause these kids thought it was their fault they did something wrong but sadly when you adopt a foster kid they come with baggage from the horrors they dealt with and need therapy and more attention than most kids but sadly that's how most states run things before adoption is finalized there's a stand by period so if the adopted family don't think it's a good fit they can return the kids like effing walmart

Мама сына (9 лет)

My husband and I wanna do foster care. I admire people like your mom. May God bless her for how she is loving on so many children. It's a sad and messed up world that we live in.
