But I agree with a previous poster saying Martin Luther King had a movement for racial equality, that's a way better reason (in my opinion) for a holiday to be observed.
I have never second guessed not having good Friday off or anything. But I'm not religious whatsoever so it doesn't bother me. I see where everyone is coming from though
i dont get off for mlk day.. lol or veterans and i have to work tomorrow.. its not a holiday today.. even though im christian lol im mad easter is on sunday soo ill already be off lol
@brooklyn0516, I agree! I think the government should base their decisions off what is best for the HUMAN RACE, for people's rights... People can teach their children whatever they want religiously, and they can practice whatever they want as long as nobody is being harmed. Don't want an abortion? Don't have one. Don't like gay marriage? Don't marry the same sex. But you can't take basic human rights away bc of ONE religion's beliefs - they don't apply to everybody.
My kids are Jewish, so it's kind of funny that every assumes everyone in America is Christian....they get extra days off because of it though!!!
@killxj0y, I hate that argument lol Sure at first when it was strictly Roman Catholics literally starting this country... But since then there are many religions considered Christian. All a little bit different. Also, this is the country of diversity. So WHY is everyone trying to force beliefs down other people's throats? Lol you're exactly right. Every race, religion, culture, etc is supposed to be accepted. Yet you hardly see that. I am a full believer in the separation of church and state. I support everyone's religious beliefs as long as it does no harm to others. I also believe the government should run without favoring one religion over another.
I also disagree that the US government has tried to remove Christianity entirely for the simple fact that churches don't even pay taxes. Not saying that I think they should but if they were really trying to eliminate it I think they would make it a lot harder for them to practice their religion when Christianity is one of the most supported religions in the US.
@brooklyn0516, A lot of people will try to make the argument that America was built on Christian beliefs or whatever but the fact of the matter is what is SUPPOSED to make America "great" is that it is SUPPOSED to be a safe haven for any and everyone regardless of culture, religious beliefs, etc.
Lol I sent that before I saw your reply @killxj0y but exactly. The same way Veterans Day and Memorial Day are holidays.
I agree @killxj0y about different religious holidays. It's asinine to assume everyone in America, the melting pot, would be of the same religion.
@brooklyn0516, I agree. Some people may want or need the extra pay! Not everyone agrees with Christianity's beliefs but I'm pretty sure most of the country agrees with MLK's movement for ALL men to be seen as equal.
Separation of church and state. The entire country is not Christian. I'm not religious at all, so would I be expected to work on good Friday because I don't believe in it? Lol also if I were pagan, would I be able to take off work during the Solstices? It's a slippery slope. One you'll definitely get some people heated about lol
I know my public school taught me about Christianity. And any other religions incorporated in my school's curriculum was very minimal (as was Christianity). I don't think it's "sad" really.. I think all religions should be acknowledged to teach children tolerance but there's limits, religion is a very sensitive subject and a very personal thing that should be taught at home if the family wishes to do so. As far as the workplace thing - it's understandable that MLK day is automatically off - that's a human race thing, an equality thing. That being said I think if an employee is religious that they should be able to have the option to be like "hey - I celebrate this in my religion, I would like this day off" and the company would honor it without consequence to the employee.
I believe the majority of America celebrates Easter, even if not for religious purposes (bunny, eggs, family lunch, etc) so most places and schools do permit it as a real holiday. Retail will not, and other places only really close on Christmas and MAYBE thanksgiving. Either way, it's supposed to be connected to Easter through Jesus' resurrection, overtime though, I believe people just wanted another day off from work for non-religious reasons because it has to do with Easter.
it is due to the separation of church and state as they call it.... however I have noticed that banks close at noon on good Friday now, so it's a step in the right direction, albeit a small step
by all means I'm not racist. but Martin Luther King Jr. got his own day practically because he had a ton of supporters and had good movements. Jesus Christ is practically the same thing. one was religious , one wasn't. if we have MLKJ Day , then we should have all religious holidays off as well!
I think the United States entire government system has consistently made efforts to remove Christianity entirely (That's what the New World Order is all about.) and I think it's sad. Schools, workplaces, etc. don't acknowledge Christianity, but schools teach about other religions and that's exactly why my children will be homeschooled
im christian and i see MLK more of a reason to have off than good friday, i feel like its a personal religious thing.
