Anyone take the gestational diabetes test around 21.5 weeks and easily pass and the doc is making you take it again closer to 28 weeks just to make sure you don't develop it later down the line? I'm so bummed since I thought I was already in the clear. Is this normal? (Please answer only if you have had this happen to you or have a nursing type background. Well, unless you want to join in with me in thinking this sucks.) I've already talked to my midwife and nurse since I just didn't see why it made sense but they both said I needed to take it and agreed I already passed the first one and am not borderlined.
yep it is routine if you have had gestational diabetes previously to do it at least twice
@zoe662, I did! But I also have two other kids and had gestational diabetes with both of them. I did one at 10 weeks, one at 22 weeks and another at 27 weeks.
hmm I've never heard of it being done that early unless the urine you give at the beginning of your appts comes back abnormal. it could be just you particular ob office that does it twice. some insurance will only cover the test once I know mines wont
did you have gestational diabetes previously or alot of sugar in your urine. thats usually the only reason why it would be done before 24 weeks.the test usually is done in between 25-28 weeks. in your case be done before the recommended time it is routine to have it done again
Thanks @mrsreneau - the one at 21.5 was the first and now they scheduled another between 26-30. Thanks for the insight. My concern was if this was normal to have two when the first was so good. Many thanks for the post w/addl info.
Did you take another test before this one at 21.5? Some doctors offices require that patients take 2 tests. Everyone takes one between 26-30 weeks generally. But some doctors like to do one beforehand to get a baseline idea of where your sugar is, and to see if your numbers are indicators of early onset. Gestational diabetes does not usually present until later in pregnancy, hence why everyone does the one later on. This may not be the exact reason your doctor is doing it, but seeing as they gave you no reasoning for it, I would assume that's the cause. However 21.5 weeks is a bit late do the first one. Hope I helped at least a little. (I'm a nursing student... Graduating in May, did my clinicals in L&D focus).
Thanks ladies. It just seemed odd cause they said I'm in perfect health. I appreciate the input!
