Anyone else want to give up on this whole breastfeeding thing? Saw lactation consultant yesterday who put me in a feeding schedule. Every three hours put baby to breast for 30 minutes then bottle fed up to 2 1/2 oz depending on how session goes to make sure he's getting enough then pump 10-15 minutes. Don't know how long I can hang on with this.
It's hard. it sucks for a while but in the end it's worth it. breastfeeding takes alot of dedication. I hope it works out for you. good luck.
Well, I can say that I don't know everything. I'm glad your baby is doing better! :) @troesler
@diamos, since you're on a similar schedule, what do you do if baby is still sleeping when he's due for another feeding? To spare my sanity I let him sleep just now until he woke me to feed which was a good hour past what the schedule dictated. Now I'm worried I'm messing everything up. I still pumped per the schedule though
Don't be too hard on yourself if you decide breastfeeding won't work for you and your baby. I'm still trying to decide what is best for us. I'm pumping both sides for 15 minutes and literally getting only milliliters of milk. It's discouraging, but I'm trying to be positive and give it all I've got right now.
@shamrockjemm, baby had lost almost an entire lb in 4 days when i was exclusively putting him to my breast, most likely bc he wasn't latching correctly. Per his pediatrician I needed to start pumping to see how much I got and then supplement with formula to get to feeding him 2oz every 2 hours. Luckily in just three days time between that appt and seeing my lactation consultant he gained back 12oz with only having to use about 7-8oz of supplemented formula. Now she has me on this schedule to help get him back to exclusively breast feeding and then pumping to build my supply. Putting my baby on a bottle was what I needed to do so he would thrive and get the food he couldn't bc of his latch. He has done really really with going between bottle and breast. And yes, @diamos this pumping thing is really getting to me. If I could just put him to my breast or magically have a bottle to feed him with breast milk that I didn't have to sit and pump for 15 minutes to get, I feel it would be such a breeze. My fantasy goal would be to get to 6 months, my husband thinks getting to 3 months would be a huge accomplishment. Now I'm thinking if I make it to next Friday's lactation consultant appt without cancelling will be a miracle.
I'm in the same boat and got the same advice from the lactation consultant. It's a grueling schedule when you're taking care of baby too.
what kind of lactation consultant are you seeing? Putting baby on a bottle could seriously hurt your supply. Your supposed to nurse until your baby is ready to be done, and feed on demand. then after a breastfeeding sessiom, pump 20 minutes, rest 10, pump 10, rest 10, and pump 10. That will help bring your supply up, and keep your supply from dropping.
@troesler, I've been having the same problem. I've been letting him sleep as well and I feel like I've messed up the schedule too. It's not easy getting back on track.
