I think it's humiliating for children and demeaning And hypocritical. parents spank their children for hitting. In their child's mind they think "why are you hitting me for hitting someone?" Or they break a rule or they're "not nice" so parents spank them. Spanking is hitting, hitting is not nice. So parents can "break rules" just because the child did it? I feel I'd be teaching my child that it's okay for grown ups to break rules, hit and be mean but not children. When in reality it's not okay for anyone to do those things.

@hkatedavis, no problem. I grew up in a house of spankings and I never was spanked. (Still am a very rule abiding person) My brother however was constantly spanked. And I turned out just fine where as my brother just continually broke the rules and continued to get spankings. Some children it works l, others it doesn't. Personally I don't want to risk it making a child's behavior worse. I think a time out or taking a break is more effective and builds trust and respect.

@carterclaytonb, I also grew up in a house of spanking and it never helped. I grew up resenting my parents and not wanting to obey them because I didn't feel the were nice to me or deserved it. I grew up not really trusting them because of this.

My professors in my family life major generally seem to advise against it. There are many more effective ways of discipline available. And I think if you want love and respect from child, then they deserve the same.

I don't know but I believe in it. I think that children now rule the household and have less respect for their parents. there is a huge difference in behavior from my generation (born 1980) and the next. I got my butt whipped when appropriate and I am very respectful. now you can't spank without someone trying to call cps on you. do what you think is appropriate and works for you and your family. :)

my girls have to really push my buttons for me to spank them, and the few times I have had to it didn't phase them. taking stuff away and early bedtime works better for them.
