You can move to a convertible when you're ready. Infant seats have a weight and height limit on them and that is technically when you'd transition. But some little ones outgrow the seat in that it seems like they're too big even if they're within the guidelines. People usually transition sometime after a first birthday (unless they've had the convertible seat since day one of course). We like Chicco and Britax seats. Some Graco ones are nice too. Make sure you get info about rear facing vs front facing with convertible seats so you can make the right decision for your little one.

the infant car seat will work until the baby is 20/25 lbs.. usually a year. a convertible carseat is used instead of an infant car seat. you'll just need to get the next up car seat, toddler. it looks like a convertible but isnt. you have a year though usually

I didn't buy a convertible seat till my son was almost a year. He fit into his infant car seat for a year. Then after that I bought a convertible graco one that was rear facing up till he was 2 1/2. Then I recently bought another graco that's a forever combo and has the forward facing harness, then can be a high back booster seat, then can be just a regular booster. And I love it!

My son's infant seat limit is 30 pounds and/or 30 inches tall. So make sure you read your infant seat's guidelines.......
