So since I'm home with a hurt foot, I've been researching things about labor, delivery, post partum, etc. I was reading up on all the things they give baby after she's born.. Well after reading up on the newborn eye drops and realizing that it's only necessary if I have an STD, which I dont, I figured I would just opt out... So after more research on it I find out in some states it's mandatory by law... Tennessee just happens to be one of those states... A 100 year old law is telling me that I HAVE to let the hospital staff give my daughter eye drops that arent necessary in the least bit. Eye drops that cause swelling and some discomfort along with mild blindness for a couple days (on top of newborn half blindness lol). So needless to say, I'm pretty pissed... WHY does she HAVE to have this when my fiance and I are both 100% STD free... Not only will I be forced to let them give my daughter these eye drops, they are doing it within an hour after she's born.. I will also be opting out of the Vit K shot, unless my Dr tells me I'm severly lacking in Vit K. and if that's the case I will request the supplement by mouth rather than injection... This is MY baby.... But hey the State of Tennessee is forcing unneeded eye drops on my daughter.

as a lab tech, the silver nitrate eye drops/ointment they put in the baby's eyes are not just for STDs. it will also protect the baby against e coli, Proteus, lactobacillus, and other bacteria that can easily be down there because some of them are normal flora of the female vagina. that's why there are multiple states that require the baby to have them, but I respect your opinion

There's probably another reason they give these eye drops besides STDs

they've put those eye drops in my both my previous babies eyes...I didn't even think to ask or look up the reasoning 😨 I literally just thought it was for lubrication since they were in fluid for so long.. even in third pregnancy, you learn something new 😊

Literally every article I've read today the MAIN reasoning was because of STDS such as gonorrhea... I'm definitely not saying you are wrong in any way when I know you are right, but I feel that it's no where near necessary enough to make it mandatory by state law @ginnalynn

Those 2 things are state mandates in CT as well but one thing my midwives and childbirth instructor has told us is that we don't have to consent to getting them done. They can't take your baby away or not allow you to leave because you don't do it. As a parent you have the right to decide for your child. We're not doing the eye goop for the same reason and are still iffy on the vitamin k. The midwife explained it is mainly for clotting so if they have bruising and such when they're born or if you're having a boy and considering circumcision it's a good idea to get it. You're the momma, if you've done your homework and don't want it for your child you tell them you do not consent to it and they can't do it.

I understand why you feel it may not be necessary, but some states just find that the risk that your child could be permanently blinded by those bacterias isn't worth not having it done. just imagine if hospitals werent required to do the silver nitrate drops and some babies end up permanently blind due to bacteria that is normally found in the female vagina, then parents may start suing the hospitals for not pushing those drops. I just didn't want you to think that STDs are the only reason for them momma, because I would agree 100% if it only was for gono and chlamydia
