I work for AT&T, so now there's no more 2 yr contracts. We do the at&t next plan which is paying for the phone through installments monthly. So if he was looking to get a new phone, I would check his upgrade eligibility by calling in to customer service.

With the installments, upfront he would pay the taxes on the phone which is no more than $70 at the time of purchase.

He has the Galaxy 5 I'm pretty sure he's paid the phone off since October 2014 that he's had it, so he'll have to pay that upfront & then pay the monthly bill & keep paying off the phone with the monthly bill ? @maddiesmommy22

If he's on a 2 yr contract he hasn't been paying for the phone, he's just been paying for his services. Monthly he'd be paying either 15 or 25 for her service based on his plan plus his monthly installment which is something he would chose. If his bill isn't past due that's not something he would need to worry about. If he's on the next installment plan already, depending on what month he's on & the condition of the phone itself he would have to trade that phone he has in & get a new one & just pay the taxes upfront on his new phone

I would have him call 611 on his phone & get more information on his contract.
