I'm not even halfway through The Business of Being Born and it's already irritating. I worked in a hospital and so many time patients get upset cause they said "well I didn't have a choice" guess what? YES you do. you can refuse things! you don't have to accept the epidural and it's absolutely ridiculous that women on here are saying they didn't have a choice. or about pitocin cause you already had the IV in your arm? really? ASK questions. it is not the hospital or the nurses fault that you didn't speak up and say NO. they will even give you forms to sign saying you refused something. it's not about being a business it's about every one in the US being sue happy so yes, a hospital has to save their own ass too! a lot of you might not know that if one thing went wrong or the wrong dose of something was given guess who that comes back on? the nurse or doctor who gave it. they lose their license and it ruins their life. it's absolutely no one else's fault but your own if you can't speak up and say NO unless there is a medical reason like pre-eclampsia then it doesn't matter cause there is also a baby involved not just you.
This is all just MY opinion because ive seen it first hand.

With my last pregnancy the doctor told me if I refuse portions or all service they recommend my insurance has the right to deny payment for the claim, it's not always just that easy

so you did all of that just to not have to pay a bill? @misserinc again what I'm saying is people claim they had no other choice. you made the decision you did for insurance and that's fine. I'm not being a bitch or anything like that but these women are literally saying they had NO choice.
