UPDATE: thanks to an awesome member here I'm finding out that this woman is most likely NOT a cop but a crazy cat hoarder. Her real name is not what I thought it was and I may have a harder time getting my cats back than I thought. Wish me luck. 😥
So.. the police officer who adopted my two sweet cats 3 years ago when I was homeless and going through a terrible separation in NYC randomly emailed me two days ago asking if I wanted my cats back. "Wondering if you wanted your cats. I guess it's safe to say you you moved on...?" Along with the email is a thread of messages I sent her in the past asking for updates, photos and visits as I was trying to secure housing, to which she NEVER replied. I think it's an amazing coincidence that I'll be in NY in two weeks for my wedding and we are indeed driving back so I responded that I absolutely wanted my cats back. For goodness sake I have a tattoo of one their names on me and I see it everyday and feel like a failure. I miss them deeply. Anyway, fast forward to today and she STILL has not responded. I'm obviously becoming more and more emotional and I don't know if there's anything I can do to get my cats back. I've searched for her on Facebook, MySpace and every other social media platform. I emailed her three times and sent a message to her iPad. What would you do? I've thought about contacting the police department but I have no idea what precinct she works for and I don't want to get accused of stalking or anything (did some research, that's actually a possibility if you try to find an officer). 😢

@emily18234, sure did. She's in her late 40s if I recall and doesn't have one. She still uses AOL as her email service.

if there's documentation that she is the new owner or the owner of the cats then you can't do anything legally.. but you can keep trying to contact her every hour lol it'll annoy her enough. pets are looked at like property in most states..

@gypsy.soul2, there's no documentation and the email clearly says "do you want YOUR cats back?" So I think it proves that she's a temporary foster.

as long as she hasn't paid any veterinary costs then I don't see there being much of a battle. I work with the humane society and was just trying to help. Here in the southern states (that I know of) if a foster has an animal for over 2 weeks and there's no rescue tied to the Animal then the animal is technically the fosters "property" especially if they're the ones providing for said animal.

@gypsy.soul2, yeah I totally hear what you're saying. But why email me 3 years later asking if I want them back, just to NOT give them back to me? I've searched public records to no avail. I'll keep looking though. Thank you.
